True North: The Art and Activism of Phillip Murphy

Opens March 27th, 2026

True North is a photography showcase featuring an impressive collection of images by the late citizen journalist and artist Phillip Murphy. A polarizing figure, Murphy used his camera for both art and advocacy.

As an artist, Murphy captured the beauty he saw in the world through highly accomplished nature and landscape photography and still life portraits. As a citizen journalist, he used photography and social media to provide real-time crime and car accident reporting and raise awareness of rising violence in his North Minneapolis community. This work earned him both praise and criticism from members of a vibrant community grappling with issues of crime, policing, race, and justice.

Philip Murphy passed away in 2024, leaving behind a rich body of work that captured both scenes of beauty and brutality. Come learn more about Murphy and discover his artwork.
