We love volunteers.

We have various volunteer opportunities throughout the year including:

  • Researching and writing about Hennepin County historical topics to be featured in our blog, website, social media pages or an exhibit.
  • Assisting the Collections Manager on the collections inventory project, including researching, cataloging, photographing, and entering data into the database.
  • Working with the Archivist with various projects in the Museum’s archives collection and/or staffing the Museum’s Reading Room and Library.
  • Support Museum events, either on-site events as a greeter or helping to set-up and clean-up, or off-site tabling at community events and engaging with community members about the Museum.

Visitor Services Volunteer

Position Description

The Visitor Services Volunteer is the first museum representative guests meet when they come to our exhibits and research library, thus they are the face of the museum. The Visitor Services Volunteer plays an important role in assuring our guests have an informative, enjoyable visit. By creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, we can be assured guests will enthusiastically recall their visit to Hennepin History Museum and recommend us to others.

Essential Functions

The Visitor Services Volunteer performs the following front desk duties:

  • Warmly greet guests
  • Accurately process admission and membership fees
  • Orient guest to the layout of museum and describe current exhibits
  • Answer questions about the museum, its collections, research library, and the Christian family/mansion
  • Encourage guests to sign-up for monthly emails
  • Offer membership information and show a copy of Hennepin History magazine
  • Distribute postcard(s) of upcoming events
  • Respond in timely manner to phones calls and staff inquiries

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High school degree or GED
  • Experience with computers
  • Ability to learn point of sales systems
  • Ability to learn customer database software
  • Excellent communication skills (comfortable greeting and talking with the public)
  • Detail oriented
  • Enjoys history

Preferred Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Degree (or current major) in history, art history, public history, or museum studies
  • Experience with point of sales systems
  • Experience with customer database software
  • Knowledge of local history

Shift(s):

Thursday:   10 am – 3 pm

Friday:        10 am – 3 pm

Saturday:   10 am – 5 pm;  10 am – 1 pm;   1 pm – 5 pm

Working Conditions

Our building is non-ADA accessible; you must be able to climb stairs. No central air conditioning.

The museum has implemented the following mitigation measures:  safety shield at the Front Desk, on-line ticketing, masks and social distancing required of all guests/staff, disinfectant materials available for all guests/staff on every floor of the museum.
