Join us for, "St. Louis Park : The Great Swamp and Skunk Hollow," a guided walking tour produced in collaboration with the St. Louis Park Historical Society and Park Tavern which will shine a light on the fascinating undercity of St. Louis Park .
This tour of St.. Louis Park's industrial past will take place in two parts, with a break for lunch at the Park Tavern (pizza included!). In the morning we'll tour the northern side of the area once known as "The Great Swamp." We'll learn how Thomas B. Walker's vision for industry enjoyed a promising launch in 1890, only to be scuttled by the Panic of 1893, briefly revived by the humble sugar beet, and finally leaving a hidden legacy of groundwater pollution.
Then, after lunch, we'll explore "Skunk Hollow," (the historical name for the Oxford Industrial district) and uncover a history every bit as colorful as the area's nickname. We'll learn about St. Louis Park's first industry — the ill-fated Globe Mill — and consider how the adjacent wetlands influenced development.
The tour will start from the Park Tavern, at 3401 Louisiana Ave S, St Louis Park, MN 55426. Ample parking is available in the Park Tavern lot.
Cost: $40. HHM members save $10 on each ticket.
