About the Memory Lab
HHM’s Memory Lab, part of our new program, Radical Roots: New Approaches to Family History, is a workspace that gives you access to technologies that enable you to “move” your treasured memories into today’s digital world.
What can I do in the Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab has equipment to:
- Digitize out-of-date formats like audio and VHS tapes
- Convert 8 mm and Super 8 film to a current format (.mp4)
- Scan photos, negatives, and slides to .jpg or .pdf
Where is the Memory Lab?
The Memory Lab is located just outside HHM’s Research Library in the Museum.
Is there a cost to use the Memory Lab?
The first visit to the memory lab is free. During this time, you can get an introduction to the equipment and learn basic operation.
Subsequent lab visits are $5 per hour.
When is the Memory Lab open?
The Lab is open the same hours as the Museum: Thursdays and Fridays, 10 am to 3 pm; Saturday 10 am – 5 pm.
How do I make an appointment to use the equipment in the Memory Lab?
Send an email request for an appointment to: research@hennepinhistory.org
Describe what kind of items you want digitized (documents, videos, slides, etc.) and what days/times you’d like to visit.
What if I don’t know how to operate the equipment in the Memory Lab?
Usage guides are available for each piece of equipment, and an introduction will be provided by museum staff.
What about digitizing at other locations?
We offer digitization workshops at other locations. Let us know if you’re interested. Email research@hennepinhistory.org
