LIBRARY AND COLLECTIONS
The Hennepin History Museum library and collections encompass a vast number of items which provide information on any number of subjects relating to Hennepin's history. In this section, you can learn more about the various artifact collections held at HHM - objects like toys and dolls, quilts, Native American artifacts, household items, decorative arts objects and costumes. The HHM collection is not limited to these types of items, however; this merely highlights our significant collections and shows some examples. In order to get an idea of the variety of our object collection, you really must visit us in person.
Like the collections featured on this Web site, the Library section merely highlights some of our significant archival holdings. Photography is clearly one of our most-used collections, but personal papers, business and government documents and maps also provide researchers with valuable information about Hennepin's history. Many of the items in our vast archive fall into the category of "ephemera," items that are not easily categorized. Think of restaurant menus, schoolwork, ticket stubs, event programs or business advertisements. These types of items are not highlighted on this web site, but they are available to researchers in the Museum's library.
Our extensive library and archives are open to the public during Museum hours and by appointment. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors/kids. Please come prepared with pencils, notebooks and money for the photocopier. Pens, purses and book bags are not allowed in the library, but may be checked at the front desk or locked in your car. Please note that the HHM collection is non-circulating, so you cannot borrow materials.
If you know the materials that you require are not accessible to the public, please consider calling or e-mailing in advance in order that someone can pull the material and have it ready for you when you arrive.
For research questions please direct your query to Susan Larson-Fleming, HHM archivist at susan.larson-fleming@hennepinhistory.org. Susan is generally in the building and able to assist patrons Tuesday-Thursday during library hours. If you know that you will need assistance be sure and call ahead for Susan's availability.
